Turn Your Past Into Power

Visit your past when you need to build your-Minds useful library.

Mine has a lot of dusty books on its shelves. Every now and then, I walk back into that library, pull a few down, open them up, and remember what they taught me. I pulled out a couple this morning. They helped me write this piece today.

Your past is not meant to be a place where you live forever. It is a place you can visit when you need wisdom, strength, or a reminder of how far you have come. Some books in that library are painful to open. Some pages still carry tears. But even the hardest chapters may hold a lesson you need today.

The key is not to live in that library. power formula with r and i Do not sleep on its dusty floor or let old books tell you who you are today. Visit when you need a lesson. Take what is useful. Put the book back on the shelf. Then walk out into the daylight and keep building the life in front of you.

Even people who feel anger toward me, I hope this helps them somehow. It must be exhausting to carry so much bitterness, jealousy, ego, and resentment in the heart. Anger burns energy. Lies drain peace. Holding on to hate can rob a person of joy before they even realize what it has cost them.

I have always said the best facelift in the world is a great big smile.

The next time somebody walks up to you wearing that grumpy face, you may just say, “Dang, Roy was right about this.”

Your Past Is Power

Your past does not have to be a prison. It can become a power source.

The hard years, the rejection, the losses, the times people misunderstood you, and the moments you were left to figure things out alone none of those things have to be the final definition of your life. They can become raw material. You cannot change what happened, but you can change the meaning you build from it.

That is where power begins.

A painful past can teach you endurance. It can teach you how to notice danger, how to value peace, how to keep going when things get hard, and how to become kinder because you know what it feels like to need kindness.

The goal is not to pretend the pain was good.

The goal is to refuse to let it have the last word.

Build Your Toolbox

Every person needs an inner toolbox: a collection of practices, beliefs, reminders, and habits that help them come back to themselves when life gets loud.

Your toolbox should be personal. What works for one person may not work for another. Yours might include running, prayer, music, writing lyrics, a quiet walk, a trusted friend, healthy food, sleep, breathing, or time outside. Someone else’s may include counseling, a journal, a support group, art, scripture, or simply learning when to walk away from an argument.

But the purpose is the same:

When stress comes, you do not have to start from zero.

You reach for the tools you have practiced.

For me, God belongs above the toolbox—not inside it. Faith is not just another tool to pick up when life goes wrong. Faith is the foundation under everything else. God’s wisdom gives direction. God’s love gives strength. Prayer gives me a place to put the fear, the anger, the questions, and the pain I cannot carry alone.

And love gives a person a reason to keep becoming better.

Train Your Mind

Healing is not always one great dramatic moment. Often, it is training.

It is choosing a healthier thought when the old thought returns. It is taking a breath before reacting. It is going for a walk instead of feeding the worry. It is praying before panic becomes the boss. It is learning that your mind can be trained to notice what helps instead of only what hurts.

Over time, good practices become more natural. Stress may still arrive, but you recognize it faster. Worry may still knock, but it does not get a key to the whole house.

That is not weakness.

That is discipline.

Think of it as updating your inner system. You do not repair a vehicle once and expect it never to need attention again. You check the oil. You change the tires. You listen for strange sounds. The mind and body deserve the same care.

Some seasons require new tools.

The Runner Within

I sometimes wonder what I could have done in sports if I had understood all this sooner. I ran track. I ran road races. I was a good runner because I was mentally tough, even before I knew how to build a complete toolbox for my mind.

Maybe I was stronger than I gave myself credit for.

A tough runner understands something important: the race is not won in the first burst of speed. It is won by the person who keeps breathing, keeps moving, and finds another step when the legs begin to burn.

That is life.

Do not measure yourself only by how far you have left to go.

Measure yourself by the fact that you are still climbing.

Love Is Strength

The greatest gift I believe God gave me is the power of love.

Not weak love. Not love that allows people to mistreat you without boundaries. Not love that ignores wrongdoing. Real love is strong enough to say, “What you did was wrong,” without becoming cruel in return. Real love refuses to enjoy another person’s suffering, even when that person has caused pain.

That is not softness.

That is moral strength.

People may lie about you. They may speak behind your back. They may steal from you, mock you, or try to turn your pain into entertainment. But you still have a choice about what you become in response.

You can become bitter.

Or you can become wiser.

You can let hate write your next chapter.

Or you can let love hold the pen.

God knows the truth of a person more deeply than the crowd ever will.

Choose Mercy

The world will try to teach you that strength means domination, revenge, and making somebody else afraid.

It does not.

Strength is surviving without losing your soul.

Strength is having the power to hurt and choosing instead to heal.

Strength is facing the past, gathering its lessons, placing the right tools in your mind, and using them to build the life you once thought was impossible.

Your past happened.

But your future is still being written.

I rose from the ashes of all I had known,

With scars like maps and a heart of stone.

The past may have bent me, but never my will

I carry its lessons, and I’m rising still.
